The White House said on Monday that US president Barack Obama has not decided if he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next month.

Obama had agreed to meet Putin in Moscow ahead of a September 5-6 summit of the Group of 20 major economic powers in Saint Petersburg.

However, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that the planned meeting is now under review after Russia gave asylum to Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor who leaked details of US spying programs.
"While we have a wide range of interests with the Russians, we are continuing to evaluate the utility of a summit," Carney said.

"We obviously disagree with the Russians very strongly about the decision they've made on Mr. Snowden," he added.

Carney said the US is also angry at Russia’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, an “issue where we have failed to see eye-to-eye."

Relations between the US and Russia became very tense after Russia granted asylum to Snowden.

The exposure of NSA’s massive and illegal surveillance campaign has made troubles for the US government.

Thousands of people held rallies across the United States on Sunday to protest the recently revealed surveillance programs.

The protesters gathered to “draw attention to the NSA’s unconstitutional surveillance program,” and to protect the principles of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution.

According to Human Rights Watch, whistleblowers in the intelligence and national security sectors are highly vulnerable to retaliation should they try to bring serious abuses to light about the US government.
